At Polar Infrastructure, we believe that local advocacy with governments and active participation in networks and organisations committed to growing the Circular Economy and to decrease carbon in the economy and decrease energy usage is crucial to drive meaningful change.
We’re committed to being the torchbearer for sustainability and safety in the built environment and we work actively and closely with policymakers and like-minded groups to amplify our impact and contributions.
Our Approach
Polar Infrastructure’s advocacy is grounded in our commitment to harness sustainability and innovation to increase product life cycles and improve financial sustainability. We believe that addressing complex environmental and safety challenges requires a collaborative approach, integrating advanced technologies and evidence-based practices. Our efforts go beyond compliance, we strive to lead by example and set new standards in sustainability and safety, ensuring people get home safely every day. We will therefore continue to make practical suggestions to governments and our networks on:
- How to reduce the environmental impact of construction
- How to leverage sustainable waste management
- Priorities for policies and spending on our shared goal of ensuring people get home safely every day
- Gaining additional energy efficiency and sustainable lighting benefits
Climate Resilience
We have made a number of submissions and undertaken advocacy with governments, Councils, as well as small, medium, large and family owned buisnesses on ways to address the risks posed by climate change to our built environment and infrastructure. Key priorities include:
- Enhanced resilience measures: Implementing advanced resilience measures in infrastructure projects to with stand the increasing frequency and severity of extreme weather events.
- Driving the Circular Economy: Promoting the use of local, more sustainable low-to-no operational carbon materials and products to grow local jobs, reduce waste and environmental impact.
- Policy alignment: Ensuring that government policies are not only ambitious but are also effectively translated into tangible actions and outcomes on the ground that decrease carbon in the economy, decrease energy usage and prioritise energy efficiency.
Infrastructure Emissions Reduction
We’ve advocated widely to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in government infrastructure and emphasised the need for a comprehensive and integrated approach to sustainability. Key priorities include:
- Mandating low emissions technologies: How to reduce the environmental impact of construction by implementing mandatory use of low-emission materials, improved energy efficiency performance standards and sustainable waste management technologies across all government infrastructure projects.
- Circular Economy practices: Prioritising materials diverted from local and Australian waste streams to support the circular economy and reduce landfill.
- Whole-of-government approach: Ensuring cohesive policies that align climate change, recycling, and procurement strategies for more effective and sustainable outcomes.
Road Safety and Vulnerable Road Users
Our advocacy extends to improving road safety, particularly for vulnerable road users. Our key priorities are focused on reducing the personal, community and economic impacts of Road Trauma and ensuring people get home safely every day. Specific examples include:
- Holistic road safety solutions: Adopting comprehensive safety measures that address both behavioural and environmental factors affecting road safety.
- Focus on vulnerable users: Prioritising the safety of pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists through targeted interventions such as high friction surfaces and advanced warning systems.
- Data-driven policies: Leveraging detailed and up-to-date crash data to inform and refine road safety strategies, ensuring they are effective and responsive to current trends.
