Client problems
The City of Melbourne identified significant safety issues at the busy Queensberry intersection, a critical point for pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles. High traffic volumes and frequent accidents necessitated an urgent upgrade to improve safety and manage traffic flow effectively.
The existing infrastructure at this intersection lacked advanced safety features to cater to the needs of modern urban mobility, particularly for vulnerable road users like cyclists and pedestrians.
Given the complex traffic patterns and diverse user needs, the City required a multifaceted solution that would enhance visibility, provide clear guidance to all road users, and ensure compliance with local safety regulations.
Additionally, the solution needed to be sustainable and cost-effective, minimising maintenance requirements while maximizing safety benefits.
The City also wanted to incorporate technology that would be future-proof, providing long-term benefits and adaptability to evolving urban mobility trends.
Our solution
Vivacity collaborated closely with the City of Melbourne to scope, design and provide a comprehensive and integrated solution for the Queensberry Street intersection.
The project involved installing Vivacity Bicycle and Scooter Activated Lights, OmniGrip Coloured Surface Treatment (OmniGrip CST) on the road surface, and a LED Message Display Sign.
This bespoke and integrated approach included the following solutions.
- Vivacity Bicycle and Scooter Activated Lights: These lights were placed across the intersections, with detector loops strategically placed to activate when bicycles and scooters approached the intersection. The lights flash to alert drivers to the presence of riders in the lane, providing enhanced visibility and prioritising the safety of vulnerable road users.
The lights are positioning to maximise visibility to turning drivers, including those turning left and right into the side road, as well as drivers turning from it. This reduces the risk of drivers looking for cars and trucks and not seeing approaching riders. - LED Message Display Sign: This sign was installed to monitor and display the arrival of nearby bikes and e-scooters. The bright, easily readable displays helped reduce speeding and improve driver awareness. The signs’ integration with the activated lights ensured seamless operation and contributed to a cohesive traffic control strategy.
- OmniGrip CST: The application of OmniGrip CST on the bike lane improved skid resistance and visibility. The coloured surface treatment delineates the bike lane through the intersection. The durable surface also reduced maintenance needs and costs, contributing to long-term operational efficiency.
- Comprises 75% 1-3mm crushed Australian Coloured Recycled Glass that is made in Victoria.
Detailed results and impact
The implementation of these solutions at the Queensberry Street intersection led to significant improvements:
- Increase in Cyclist and Pedestrian Safety: Enhanced visibility and clear guidance reduced risks for cyclists and pedestrians, making the intersection safer for all.
- Decrease in Vehicle Speeds: The LED Message Display Sign effectively moderated vehicle speeds when bikes were nearby, contributing to safer road conditions. Drivers became more aware of their speed, leading to more responsible driving behavior.
- Positive Community Feedback: The local community including bike riders appreciated the safety enhancements, and feedback highlighted increased confidence in using the intersection. The project received praise for its innovative approach and the tangible improvements in safety.
Benefits to City of Melbourne
- Enhanced Safety: The integrated solutions provided a significant boost to overall safety for all road users, particularly vulnerable groups. The clear signage and improved visibility ensured that all users could navigate the intersection confidently.
- Cost-Effective Maintenance: The durable materials and advanced technology used in the products reduced the need for frequent maintenance, offering long-term cost savings. The robust design of the solutions ensured they could withstand heavy use and harsh weather conditions.
- Sustainability: The solutions incorporated eco-friendly materials and technologies, aligning with the City’s sustainability goals. By promoting the use of bicycles and scooters, the project also encouraged greener modes of transport.
- Compliance: The upgrades ensured full compliance with local safety standards and regulations, providing peace of mind to the City authorities. This compliance was critical for the project’s success and the safety of all road users.
- Future-Proof Technology: The use of advanced technology ensured that the solutions would remain relevant and effective as urban mobility trends evolve. This future-proof approach provided long-term value to the City.
“Installing the Vivacity Bicycle and Scooter Activated Lights, along with the OmniGrip CST and Safety Path LED Speed Check Display Signs, has transformed the Queensberry intersection into a model of urban safety and efficiency. We are thrilled with the positive impact on our community.”

This Case Study illustrates how the collaborative efforts of Vivacity, OmniGrip Direct, and Safety Path have effectively addressed the safety challenges at the Queensberry intersection, resulting in a safer, more efficient, and sustainable urban traffic environment. The project’s success underscores the importance of innovative and integrated solutions in enhancing urban mobility and safety.
Building on the success of this bespoke, integrated safety solution, Melbourne City Council now has three installations and the Victorian Department of Transport and Planning is installing three more.
Results at a glance
- 632kg Australia recycled glass used
- Equivalent of 3,160 Beer Bottles recycled
- 505kg embodied carbon from virgin glass production avoided
- Improved traffic flow and reduced congestion
- Improved safety (especially for left hand turn crashes, injuries and deaths). An Amy Gillett Foundation study analysed more than 14,000 bicycle related crashes that occurred between 2002 and 2012. More than 11% involved drivers turning right across the path of oncoming riders. Nearly 10% involved vehicles from side roads failing to give way
- Enhanced community confidence in intersection safety
