At Polar Infrastructure, we take great pride in OmniGrip Direct’s efforts to enhance iconic tourism destinations while prioritising environmental conservation.
Our surface application at the 12 Apostles Saddle Lookout in Port Campbell National Park highlights our shared commitment to fostering local economic growth and international tourism, all while safeguarding the delicate ecosystem.
Parks Victoria needed to modernise the ageing viewing areas at the 12 Apostles to safely accommodate the growing number of local and international visitors. This iconic coastal area, known for its beauty, also has fragile ecosystems that required a design solution capable of protecting both tourists and the environment.
The solution therefore demanded a durable, slip-resistant surface that could perform effectively in various weather conditions.
As part of the Shipwreck Coast Master Plan, the Saddle Lookout was designed by Denton Corker Marshall (DCM) with two long steel platforms, carefully placed to minimise environmental impact. These structures extend towards the horizon, offering stunning views while preserving the landscape’s integrity.
Following detailed discussions, OmniGrip Direct proposed the use of 3mm OmniGrip Resurface (Black Pepper and Black Granite). This product was chosen by DCM for its outstanding slip resistance, durability, and environmentally friendly attributes, meeting the strict criteria set by Parks Victoria and the Eastern Maar peoples, the traditional custodians of the land.
The installation of 488m² of OmniGrip Resurface was executed with precision, ensuring the project was completed in time for the $9.2 million Saddle Lookout’s opening. This timely completion was crucial for maintaining visitor safety from the outset.
Results and Impacts:
- Environmental Protection: OmniGrip Resurface’s properties prevent the runoff of harmful materials, thus protecting the local flora and fauna and aligning with Parks Victoria’s sustainable initiatives.
- Visitor Safety: The superior surface treatment offers safety in all weather conditions, reducing the likelihood of slips, trips, and falls, thereby enhancing the safety of tourists throughout the year.
- Economic Sustainability: The long-lasting nature of OmniGrip Resurface translates to reduced maintenance and repair costs, bolstering the financial sustainability of the infrastructure.
Jason Borg, Regional Director at Parks Victoria, commended the project for honoring the region’s cultural heritage, prioritising environmental protection, and enhancing the visitor experience.
This initiative not only ensures secure and reliable access to one of Australia’s most renowned natural landmarks but also stimulates local business and the regional economy.
By drawing tourists and ensuring their safety, OmniGrip Resurface contributes to maintaining the site’s appeal as a major tourist attraction.
The implementation of OmniGrip Resurface at the 12 Apostles Saddle Lookout demonstrates the effectiveness of sustainable and thoughtful design. This project successfully balances the need for safe, accessible tourism with environmental conservation, ensuring that both the natural landscape and the local economy continue to thrive.
