Establishing a Local Content and Sustainability Suppliers Register (LCSSR): turbo-charging local, sustainable procurement

Introduction

Polar Infrastructure is proposing the Victorian State Government establish a Local Content and Sustainability Suppliers Register (LCSSR) to revolutionise how businesses and governments approach procurement.

This initiative, the first of its kind globally, seeks to create a comprehensive database of products and services that prioritise local content and sustainability. It represents an urgent and exciting opportunity for all stakeholders involved to contribute to a more sustainable and economically resilient future.

Polar Infrastructure has been engaging with a number of Ministers in the Victorian State Government and has made a submission to the Victorian Parliament’s Climate Resilience Inquiry which includes this priority.

We’ve also spoken to many businesses and identified several sustainable procurement gaps that can be fixed by establishing a LCSSR.

What is a Local Content & Sustainability Suppliers Register?

The concept behind the LCSSR is simple yet transformative. By compiling detailed information about the local content, environmental impact, and sustainability credentials of various products, the register provides a clear and accessible resource for decision-makers. This enables them to make informed choices that align with broader social, environmental, and economic (ESG) goals.

One of the primary drivers behind the LCSSR is the need to reduce carbon footprints associated with supply chains. By highlighting products with lower environmental impacts and promoting local suppliers, the register aims to cut down on emissions related to transportation and production. This shift not only helps combat climate change but also supports local economies, creating jobs and fostering innovation within the community.

The register is designed to be a dynamic tool, regularly updated with the latest information and innovations in sustainable practices. It could include criteria for assessing the lifecycle impacts of products, from raw material extraction to end-of-life disposal. Such a comprehensive approach ensures that all aspects of a product’s environmental footprint are considered, promoting transparency and accountability.

Why is this urgent?

The urgency of adopting the LCSSR cannot be overstated. As global concerns about climate change intensify, there is an increasing demand for businesses and governments to demonstrate their commitment to sustainability. The register offers a practical solution to this challenge, providing a clear pathway for organisations to align their procurement strategies with their sustainability goals.

Other benefits

A LCSSR represents a significant opportunity for businesses to differentiate themselves in the marketplace. By showcasing their commitment to local content and sustainable practices, companies can enhance their reputation and appeal to increasingly environmentally-conscious consumers. This, in turn, can lead to increased market share and long-term success.

Establishing the Local Content and Sustainability Suppliers Register could leverage a pivotal moment in the journey towards sustainable procurement. It provides an unprecedented opportunity for businesses and governments to collaborate in reducing environmental impacts, supporting local economies, and fostering a culture of sustainability.

This initiative is not just a response to current challenges but a proactive step towards a more sustainable and resilient future for all.
