Greener, safer solutions at Bunnings Warehouses

Smarterlite, is revolutionising safety and sustainability in major retail environments as shown by our collaboration with Bunnings Warehouse, Australia’s leading DIY chain. This highlights their commitment to environmental responsibility while enhancing safety across its extensive network of stores.

Bunnings Warehouse, part of Wesfarmers and recognised as Australia’s #1 Trusted Brand, faced the challenge of upgrading its safety systems while reducing its environmental footprint.

The traditional electric and battery-operated exit signs were costly to maintain and had a significant carbon footprint due to their energy usage, frequent replacements and testing.

Bunnings sought a solution that would ensure the safety of its 53,000 staff and millions of customer visits while aligning with its sustainability goals. This included reducing energy usage, minimising maintenance costs, and eliminating e-waste associated with traditional signage systems.

Smarterlite provided Bunnings with an innovative range of National Construction Code compliant photoluminescent products, including Environmental Exit Signs, stair treads, hand rail strips, and specialised wall paint.

These solutions not only meet the highest safety standards but also significantly reduce energy consumption and maintenance needs.

The Smarterlite Apollo and Hyperion Environmental Exit Signs were specifically chosen for their durability and efficiency. The Apollo model mitigates risks from forklift damage, while the Hyperion model, with integrated LEDs, ensures consistent illumination.

This initiative reduced Bunnings’ reliance on electrical systems and eliminated the need for frequent battery replacements, offering a sustainable and cost-effective solution.

Results and impact:

  • Enhanced safety: Reliable, durable exit signs ensure safer conditions for both staff and customers, enhancing emergency preparedness.
  • Energy efficiency: The new exit signs have drastically reduced energy consumption, resulting in substantial cost savings.
  • Operational savings: The reduced need for maintenance has improved the financial sustainability of Bunnings’ operations.
  • Environmental impact: The elimination of battery replacements has significantly reduced e-waste, aligning with Bunnings’ sustainability commitments.

Alan Dimmick, Fire Services Manager at Grosvenor Engineering Group, expressed his approval, stating:

“The brightness and functionality over the two-hour outage period exceed the required 90 minutes of AS2293. Initially sceptical about photoluminescent lights, I now endorse their supply, installation, and maintenance.”

The use of Smarterlite products at Bunnings Warehouse exemplifies a practical approach to achieving both safety and sustainability goals, setting a benchmark for future retail infrastructure projects.
