At Polar Infrastructure, we are proud to showcase how Vivacity is setting new standards in sustainable and safe lighting solutions for community spaces. Our recent project in Legana, Tasmania, highlights our commitment to creating environmentally friendly infrastructure that enhances public safety.
West Tamar Council faced a challenge in illuminating the shared user path running through a linear suburban park in Legana without disturbing local wildlife or residents. The council sought a solution that would not involve traditional overhead lighting, which is costly, energy-intensive, and potentially disruptive to nocturnal animals and the community’s tranquility.
Traditional lighting options posed several issues.
Overhead lights can disrupt local fauna, affecting their natural behaviors. They also have a much larger impact on the environment associated with energy usage and infrastructure such as unsightly poles.
Residents were also worried about light pollution affecting their privacy and sleep.
Council and residents were worried about the lack of effective lighting and related safety concerns for pedestrians, cyclists, and dog walkers using the path.
Vivacity collaborated closely with Council staff to implement Vivacity Solar-Powered In-Ground LED Stud Lights along the 600m shared user path.
A total of 150 lights were installed, providing a visible 4-directional light that clearly delineates the path without causing light spill into surrounding areas.
These solar-powered lights are not only environmentally friendly but also energy-efficient, reducing operational costs compared to traditional lighting. They are designed to be easily replaced and recycled, aligning with sustainable waste management practices.
Results and impacts:
- Enhanced visibility: The 4-directional lights ensure the path is well-lit, promoting safety for all users, including cyclists, pedestrians, and dog walkers.
- Preservation of residential amenity: The low-profile, in-ground lights minimise light pollution, maintaining the peaceful, dark sky environment desired by the community.
- Cost and energy savings: The use of solar-powered LED lights significantly lowers energy consumption and operational costs, providing a financially sustainable solution.
- Environmental benefits: By avoiding the installation of electric poles and lights, the project prevents over 3.5 tonnes of carbon emissions annually.
The Vivacity Solar-Powered In-Ground LED Stud Lights have a life expectancy of 5 to 10 years, providing long-term, sustainable lighting. This solution not only enhances public safety and supports healthy outdoor activities but also respects the local environment and community needs.
The project demonstrates how innovative lighting solutions can balance the needs of public safety, residential amenity, and environmental sustainability, setting a benchmark for future community infrastructure projects.
