OmniGrip Direct’s recent project on Grattan Street, part of Victoria’s Big Build Metro Tunnel initiative, exemplifies our commitment to improving cityscapes while prioritising environmental responsibility.
At Polar Infrastructure, we are proud of OmniGrip Direct’s role in enhancing urban infrastructure with a focus on safety and sustainability.
We worked closely with Symal, one of Australia’s most innovative specialist construction groups.
The Metro Tunnel project required a comprehensive redesign of Grattan Street to manage increased pedestrian, bike, and vehicle traffic, including emergency services.
The project called for compliant, durable, slip-resistant surfaces to accommodate wider footpaths, dedicated bike lanes, and extensive green spaces. The goal was to create a safe, visually appealing, and environmentally friendly urban space.
OmniGrip Direct provided Symal the solution with 1,344m² of Emerald Green OmniGrip CST, 60m² of Raspberry Red OmniGrip CST, and extensive OmniGrip Linemarking.
These products were selected for their durability and exceptional skid resistance, ensuring safety for all users.
The OmniGrip CST, compliant with VicRoads Section 431, enhanced the street’s aesthetic and functional appeal by clearly marking lanes and crossings.
The use of OmniGrip CST, containing 75% Australian 3mm crushed recycled glass, aligns with the sustainable practices of Victoria’s Big Build and its Recycled First Policy. This eco-friendly material not only diverted significant amounts of glass from landfill but also demonstrated the potential for sustainable urban development.
Results and impacts:
- Enhanced safety: The transformation of Grattan Street has greatly improved accessibility and safety for the diverse mix of users, including medical staff, students, and visitors to the nearby educational and health precincts.
- Sustainable materials: The project utilised OmniGrip CST, which incorporates a significant percentage of Australian recycled glass, supporting the environmental goals of the Metro Tunnel initiative.
- Long-lasting performance: The high durability and skid resistance of OmniGrip CST ensure a long-lasting surface that reduces the need for frequent maintenance, thereby minimising disruptions.
The revitalised Grattan Street also plays a crucial role in supporting the new Parkville Station and the broader Metro Tunnel project, providing improved connectivity and easing pressure on local transportation systems. This initiative not only enhances public safety but also aligns with economic and environmental sustainability goals.
Danny Pearson MP, Minister for Transport Infrastructure, stated:
“This project not only transforms our rail network but also creates great public spaces and makes streets safer for cyclists and pedestrians.”
This project highlights OmniGrip Direct’s dedication to building safer, more sustainable urban environments, showcasing the benefits of innovative surface treatments in modern city planning.
